Allright, allright, don't get smart. We copied down some information from our 2005 map to give you a taste of how groovy and useful these maps really are. The turn over of Shanghai's eateries and clubs is light speed. So,not only do we not guarantee accuracy, we also take no responsibility for any trouble you get yourself into if you download or print it.

Airport to Town: The exhilarating Maglev train runs 8 minutes between
Pudong International Airport and Longyang Road Metro Station
(Metro Line 2 ) with speeds up to 430 kms/hour! But navigating
Shanghai's crowded subway is a hassle, and combined ith Maglev
loading time takes almost as long as a 45 minute direct taxi ride
or an airport shuttle (service to a wide range of downtown hotels).
It costs 50RMB one way which should meet your need for speed!
Taking a cub to Langyang is doable.

Tipping
DO NOT TIP outside of hotels. Thankfully, it ain't expected and do you
really think paying 15% on top of food is a good idea of the West?
Don't encourage it here! 'Sides - they think you're an idiot to pay
more than the bill!

Post
Main international post office (with Post Restante), 9am-5pm,
276 Bei Suzhou Lu.

Currency / Exchange
The currency is the Reniminbe (RMB), with the Yuan its basic unit.
To confuse you further, locals don't call the Yuan by its name,
instead it's known as 'Kuai' Some hotels won't change money
or travelers checks for you unless you're a guest there, best to head
for a bank (currently, rate is fixed). Keep your transaction receipt -
you need it to exchange back before leaving China.

Important Numbers
International calls can be made from most hotel but a hefty surcharge
will be added. Ask your hotel where to buy an international phone card,
usable throughout the city.

Walking Around
Despite reports of overcrowding and pollution, exploring Shanghai on foot can be an interesting and rewarding experience - just take care
when crossing major thoroughfares. The tree-lined boulevards
in old French Concession are one of the nicest parts of town.

Bus
Nix them! Stick with taxis and the Metro

Taxi
Taxis are an easy and cheap way to get around. Drivers don't speak
English so show the destination written in Chinese on map. Flag-fall is
10RMB, with no journey costing more than around 30RMB.

Metro
with low fares of 2-4RMB, the Metro is the cheapest and fastest way
to get around, though the crowds are a bit claustrophobic.
Currently there are two lines - trains run from around 5am-midnight,
with signs and announcements in both Chinese and English.

Shanghai Website
China's policy on interned usage is pretty restrictive at the time
of print and web access might be a bit tricky, but most hotels
have internet connectivity.

Shanghai Museum
(201 Ren Min Da Dao, Tel. 6372-3500) This museum of Chinese history is housed in an awesome structure that resembles a ding (a bronze food vessel, didn't you know?) The mammoth interior holds the best Chinese bronze collection in the world as well as extensive displays of furniture, calligraphy, painting, porcelain, costumes, masks, jade and coins. Entrance is 20RMB and the audio guides are extra 40RMB.
Shanghai Grand Theatre
(300 Renmin Da Dao, Tel. 6372-8701) This impressively grandiose contemporary lanmark, noticeable by the upward arching roof, is suitably lit come evening. This is the city's prime venue for experiencing both national and international classical concerts, ballet, opera and theatre. Seat prices range from 100-500 MB.
Shanghai Art Museum
(325 Nanjing Xi Lu, Tel. 6327-2829) A visit here is pleasant enough, but how memorable the viewing can be depends on what travelling visits are on display. The permanent Chinese modern art on view is kind of swamped by an overdose of generic landscape painting. Good on a rainy day. Open till 4pm, entry is 20RMB.
Pressure Massage
( 597 Fuxing Zhong Lu, Tel. 6437-8378) Treat your aching limbs to an hour of expert care and attention by sightless masseurs. Their sense of touch and knowledge of the body's pressure points invigorate you with a new lease of life, especially if staggering in at the end of a day shopping.
Banyan Tree Spa
(The Westin, Bund Center) At the Feng Shui spa, it's all about being seasonal, elemental, personal. Earth, Water, Wood, Fire and Gold: Get a treatment suitable for your element and related to your birth-sign. Unique individual treatment rooms offer music and moods to suit your therapy of choice. The Chinese style massage is to die for.

1931 (Asian)
(112 Mao Ming Nan Lu, Tel. 6472-5264) Cute cafe-cum-restaurant with a retro mellow jazz age mood. Decor evokes a bygone era, waitresses in silk qi-paoo serving cashed up locals and the odd foreigner. Well-presented local and assorted Asian cuisine.
Pasti
(140 Xikang Lu, Tel. 6253-8358) So small and comfy, it's like you're dining in grandma's kitchen, but with table linens. Short menu, but it hits the spot.
Baci (Italian)
(2a Gao Lan Lu. Fuxing Park, Tel. 5383-2328 / 5383-2208) Set in the verdant grounds of Fuxing Park, this crowd puller has the gorgeous people in thrall. Ample portions. Try the gnocchi and lamb chops with rosemary sauce-delish!
The Door
(4/F, 1468 Hongqiao Lu., Tel. 6295-3737) Located off Xintiandi, The Door bestows East-meets-West, past-meets-present decor. Traditional Chinese music fused with modern instruments creaes funky sounds in this striking mind-blower.
Face
(Bldg 4, 118 Rui Jin Er Lu, Ruijin Guesthouse, Tel. 6466-4328) Strewn with S. East Asian collectibles and inviting lounge chairs, this laid-back bar in foliated grounds is ideal for a cool pre-partying cocktail prior to late night revelry in nearby Maoming Lu. Sit in the garden and enjoy the tunes.
Malone's
(255 Tong Ren Lu, next to Portman Hotel, Tel. 6247-2400) A generic American sports bar popular with, you guessed it, Americans. An extensive Tex-Mex menu and large screen sports coverage, keeps 'em coming back. Good burgers. Pool and darts, featured bands. Weekend pick-up joint.
