A

| Allright, allright, don't get smart. We copied down some information from our 2005 map to give you a taste of how groovy and useful these maps really are. The turn over of Beijing's eateries and clubs is light speed. So,not only do we not guarantee accuracy, we also take no responsibility for any trouble you get yourself into if you download or print it. |
Beijing's Capital Airport (Shoudu Jichang) is 25km northeast of the city center (Tel. 6457-1666, information in Mandarin only; Tel. 6601-3336 domestic ticketing; Tel. 6601-6667 international ticketing).
Taxis Taxi touts will bug you as soon as you get out of Customs. Avoid those vultures that prey on the uninformed. The sign-posted taxi rank is straight ahead and has a line that mostly works (although a few people will always try to cut in front of you). Rates are posted on the side of each cab.
Hotel Shuttles Many hotels have shuttle services, check with them.
Airport Shuttles Air-conditioned services leave from in front of the domestic arrivals area. The Airport Shuttle Bus runs three routes. Line A runs every 15 mins, 8am - 10pm. Price: Y16. It leaves from the Beijing Railway station every 15 minutes, 6am-9pm, picking up at two other stops, incl. nearby International Hotel.
By Metro The metro (ditie) is undergoing a rapid expansion, but using the existing three lines (two underground, one light rail chengtie) is essential. For now the system consists of the Circle Line (Line 2), Line 1 and Line 13. Stations are numbered and English announcements are made on trains. A ticket costs Y3 for a ride anywhere from any Circle Line or Line 1 station to any other on those two lines, with free interchange. Buy a few tickets at one time to save lining up a lot.
On Foot As a pedestrian you are on the bottom of the food chain; walkers do not have right of way in any circumstances. Save your feet for getting around temples, palaces, and markets.

(Gugong Bowuguan) Home to 24 emperors and two dynasties, the Ming and the Qing, the Forbidden City is the Mother of all ancient buildings in China. It was built by a million laborers (when you go there you'll see why); to say that this vast 200 acre complex is impressive is an understatement. Ornate interiors display exquisite artisanship and house priceless works of art, painting and calligraphy, whilst the exterior embodies principles of architecture first devised three millennia ago. Main highlights: Three Great Halls and the Hall of Supreme Harmony.
